Portuguese Conversation Classes Volunteer Teachers

🇬🇧  As I approach my first anniversary in Portugal and at PaRK, I find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me and my family here. Like many newcomers, I arrived with the ambition of becoming a Portuguese citizen—an adventure that requires, among other things, passing the A2 Portuguese exam. To my surprise, I discovered that the basics of Portuguese I learned as an exchange student in Brazil over thirty years ago were still with me. My passion for the language was born in Brazil, but understanding European Portuguese has certainly been a new and exciting challenge!

I am especially grateful to Margarida for encouraging me to join Maria Inês's advanced Portuguese Conversation class. Maria Inês is a wonderful teacher and makes her classes fun. If you're new to Portugal, I encourage you to invest time in learning Portuguese. It is one of the world's most beautiful and rich languages, and mastering it will deepen your experience of this country and its warm, vibrant people and culture. While the prevalence of English in Lisbon can be comfortable, it can also be a crutch, sometimes keeping us from truly immersing ourselves. I urge fellow foreigners: take the leap, learn Portuguese, and live in Portugal as a Portuguese.

Language is just one part of what makes our community special. The real magic comes from the people who give their time and heart to help others. This month, we shine a spotlight on some of our incredible school volunteers. Their stories remind us that volunteering is not only about giving—it's about connecting, learning, and growing together.

Meet Our Volunteers

Building Community Through Language and Music

Maria Inês's journey as a volunteer began with a simple act of kindness, helping a 13-year-old student from Guinea learn Portuguese so she could communicate with her friends. She also volunteered by leading music sessions for families and kids on the weekends at Ajuda de Berço 

Maria Inês's grandmother was a language teacher, and as a music teacher at PaRK, she seized the volunteer opportunity to teach PaRK parents Portuguese. She enjoyes seeing her students return with "shiny eyes" and growing confidence in their Portuguese language speaking abilities (I'm one of those students!). For Maria Inês, volunteering is about balance, connection, and the belief that "we are better and stronger together."

Embracing the Challenge

For Nuno, volunteering started as an opportunity he saw in the PPA newsletter. He responded on instinct, thinking it would be fun—and it was! Nuno is motivated by the opportunity to help other parents integrate into and learn about Portuguese culture. He recalls proud moments when a parent could understand nearly everything after just one hour a week, or when another was able to confidently shop and chat at the local supermarket. For Nuno, volunteering is a way to give back to a community that gives so much to his family.

Inspiring Confidence, Not Just Language

Gloria's path to volunteering felt natural—she already teaches Chinese to Portuguese speakers and saw the PPA opportunity as an extension of her passion. Her focus is on motivating students and giving them the confidence to use their new language skills. She fondly remembers a mother who, once was too shy to speak Portuguese, began chatting confidently on the playground. "It's not just about speaking better, but about having more confidence," Gloria says. She hopes all parents can experience the joy of helping others and believes that even small efforts make a big difference. Gloria shared a beautiful story that exemplifies this point. It was about a hummingbird that picks up a drop of water from a lake and flies back to drop it on the forest fire. When animals asked if the hummingbird thought that a mere drop could put out the first, the hummingbird replied that he was doing his part. When each one does their part, together we can make a difference!

Creating a Home Away from Home

Sandrina understands the challenges of adapting to a new country—her parents were immigrants in Switzerland, and she was an expat in Algeria. Now, she helps expats settle into life in Portugal, both through her work in real estate and as a volunteer. Sandrina is proud of her students' affection for Portugal, noting, "If you don't have a budget and you choose Portugal to live, it says a lot about our country." She loves spending weekends with friends and family in her garden, often with music and laughter filling the air.

Deborah and Sandrina teamed up to support parents, combining their strengths in English and Portuguese. Deborah's motivation for volunteering was to help other parents integrate and feel at home. Having lived in the UK for 14 years, she knows firsthand the challenge of adapting to a new language and culture. She treasures the "light bulb" moments when students have a breakthrough in speaking Portuguese and how the group has transformed into an open and tight-nit group. While working at the Padaria Portuguesa near the school, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand how lively and engaged the group was in their friendly conversations. For Deborah, volunteering is about making a difference, even with just an hour or two a week.

Our Volunteers

Our volunteers see volunteering as rewarding, fun, and a wonderful way to connect with others. Sandrina encourages everyone to join, saying, "It's a great opportunity to learn about different cultures and meet new people." Maria Inês emphasizes the power of community and learning from others, while Gloria reminds us that every small effort counts. Nuno believes volunteering is a personal choice, and one that is deeply gratifying. Deborah adds that even a small time commitment can make a big difference for both the school and its families.

Life Beyond Volunteering

Our volunteers are as diverse as the community they serve. Nuno enjoys surfing and mountain biking when he's not with his four-year-old daughter. Gloria balances motherhood with her love for Chinese language and drama. Sandrina loves running, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Maria Inês plays piano and practices yoga, while Deborah enjoys sports with her twin boys, music, photography, and exploring nature.

From Sunday pizza and sushi days to garden picnics with music, our volunteers cherish the traditions that bring their families together. They are passionate about music, art, travel, and helping others — each bringing their own unique story to our community.

🇵🇹  À medida que me aproximo do meu primeiro aniversário em Portugal e no PaRK, dou por mim a refletir sobre a jornada que trouxe a mim e à minha família até aqui. Tal como muitos recém-chegados, cheguei com o objetivo de me tornar cidadã portuguesa — uma aventura que exige, entre outras coisas, passar no exame de Português A2. Para minha surpresa, descobri que as bases de português que aprendi como estudante de intercâmbio no Brasil, há mais de trinta anos, ainda estavam comigo. A minha paixão pela língua nasceu no Brasil, mas compreender o português europeu tem sido, sem dúvida, um desafio novo e entusiasmante!

Estou especialmente grata à Margarida por me ter incentivado a entrar na aula de Conversação Avançada em Português da Maria Inês. A Maria Inês é uma professora maravilhosa e torna as suas aulas divertidas. Se está a começar uma nova vida em Portugal, aconselho vivamente a investir tempo na aprendizagem do português. É uma das línguas mais belas e ricas do mundo, e dominá-la aprofundará a sua experiência neste país e na sua cultura vibrante e acolhedora. Embora a presença generalizada do inglês em Lisboa seja confortável, também pode funcionar como uma muleta, impedindo-nos por vezes de nos integrarmos verdadeiramente. Por isso, lanço um apelo a todos os estrangeiros: deem o salto, aprendam português e vivam em Portugal como portugueses.

A língua é apenas uma parte do que torna a nossa comunidade especial. A verdadeira magia vem das pessoas que dedicam o seu tempo e coração a ajudar os outros. Construir Comunidade Através da Língua e da Música

A jornada de voluntariado da Maria Inês começou com um simples gesto de bondade: ajudar uma aluna de 13 anos da Guiné a aprender português para poder comunicar com os colegas. Também liderou sessões de música para famílias e crianças, aos fins de semana, na Ajuda de Berço.

A avó da Maria Inês era professora de línguas e, sendo ela própria professora de música no PaRK, aproveitou a oportunidade para ensinar português a pais da comunidade PaRK. Adora ver os seus alunos regressarem com os "olhos a brilhar" e com crescente confiança na sua capacidade de comunicar em português (sou uma dessas alunas!). Para a Maria Inês, o voluntariado é sobre equilíbrio, conexão e a crença de que "somos melhores e mais fortes juntos".

Abraçar o Desafio

Para o Nuno, o voluntariado começou com uma oportunidade que viu na newsletter da PPA. Respondeu por instinto, achando que seria divertido — e foi! O que o motiva é a oportunidade de ajudar outros pais a integrarem-se e conhecerem melhor a cultura portuguesa. Recorda com orgulho momentos em que um pai, com apenas uma hora por semana, já compreendia quase tudo, ou quando outro se sentiu confiante para fazer compras e conversar no supermercado local. Para o Nuno, o voluntariado é uma forma de retribuir a uma comunidade que tanto dá à sua família.

Inspirar Confiança, Não Apenas Linguagem

O percurso da Gloria no voluntariado surgiu naturalmente — já ensina chinês a falantes de português e viu na PPA uma extensão do seu entusiasmo pelo ensino. O seu foco está em motivar os alunos e dar-lhes confiança para utilizarem as novas competências linguísticas. Recorda com carinho uma mãe que, inicialmente muito tímida para falar português, começou a conversar com à-vontade no recreio. "Não se trata apenas de falar melhor, mas de ter mais confiança", diz Gloria.

Ela acredita que todos os pais devem experimentar a alegria de ajudar os outros e partilha uma bela história que ilustra essa ideia: um colibri recolhe uma gota de água de um lago e voa até à floresta em chamas para a largar sobre o fogo. Quando os outros animais perguntam se ele acredita que uma gota conseguirá apagar o fogo, o colibri responde que está apenas a fazer a sua parte. Quando cada um faz a sua parte, juntos conseguimos fazer a diferença.

Criar um Lar Longe de Casa

A Sandrina compreende os desafios de se adaptar a um novo país — os seus pais foram emigrantes na Suíça e ela própria viveu como expatriada na Argélia. Agora, ajuda estrangeiros a adaptarem-se à vida em Portugal, tanto no seu trabalho no setor imobiliário como enquanto voluntária. Orgulha-se do carinho que os seus alunos têm por Portugal, comentando: "Se não tens um orçamento grande e mesmo assim escolhes Portugal para viver, isso diz muito sobre o nosso país." Aos fins de semana, adora passar tempo no jardim com amigos e família, com música e gargalhadas a encher o ar.

A Deborah e a Sandrina uniram forças para apoiar os pais, combinando os seus pontos fortes em inglês e português. A motivação da Deborah para ser voluntária era ajudar outros pais a integrarem-se e sentirem-se em casa. Tendo vivido no Reino Unido durante 14 anos, sabe bem os desafios de se adaptar a uma nova língua e cultura. Valoriza os momentos "eureka" em que os alunos conseguem finalmente expressar-se em português, e adora ver como o grupo se tornou unido e acolhedor. Enquanto trabalhava na Padaria Portuguesa perto da escola, tive a oportunidade de ver de perto como o grupo é animado e envolvido nas conversas. Para a Deborah, o voluntariado é uma forma de fazer a diferença, mesmo que seja apenas com uma ou duas horas por semana.

Os Nossos Voluntários

Os nossos voluntários veem o voluntariado como algo gratificante, divertido e uma excelente forma de criar laços. A Sandrina encoraja todos a juntarem-se: "É uma excelente oportunidade para aprender sobre outras culturas e conhecer novas pessoas." A Maria Inês destaca o poder da comunidade e da aprendizagem partilhada, enquanto a Gloria lembra que cada pequeno esforço conta. O Nuno acredita que o voluntariado é uma escolha pessoal — e profundamente gratificante. A Deborah acrescenta que mesmo um pequeno compromisso de tempo pode ter um grande impacto na escola e nas famílias.

Vida Para Além do Voluntariado

Os nossos voluntários são tão diversos quanto a comunidade que servem. O Nuno adora surfar e fazer BTT quando não está com a sua filha de quatro anos. A Gloria equilibra a maternidade com a sua paixão pela língua chinesa e pelo teatro. A Sandrina gosta de correr, ler e passar tempo com amigos e família. A Maria Inês toca piano e pratica ioga, enquanto a Deborah gosta de desporto com os seus filhos gémeos, de música, fotografia e explorar a natureza.

Dos domingos com pizza e sushi aos piqueniques no jardim com música, os nossos voluntários valorizam as tradições que aproximam as suas famílias. Têm paixão por música, arte, viagens e por ajudar os outros — cada um contribuindo com a sua história única para a nossa comunidade.

Quer tenha uma hora por semana ou apenas curiosidade, o voluntariado é uma forma maravilhosa de se ligar aos outros, aprender e retribuir. A nossa escola é mais forte graças a pessoas como a Maria Inês, o Nuno, a Gloria, a Sandrina e a Deborah.
