🇬🇧 Celebrating Parent Volunteers | The Heart of Our Year Coordinator Team
Every thriving school community has a secret ingredient: dedicated parent volunteers. At our school, Year Coordinators are ambassadors for each grade that play a vital role in building bridges, fostering communication, and making every family feel welcome. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt by students, parents, and staff alike. This month, we recognize their invaluable contributions and invite more parents to join this rewarding effort.
The History of the Year Coordinator Program
The Year Coordinator program began as a formal initiative at the former PaRK Parents' Association (PPA), but it initially struggled to gain traction. When Margarida took the lead, the Year Coordinators neither had a name nor role; and they acted independently and in a siloed fashion. Margarida named the role Year Coordinator, established standard responsibilities, and brought new energy to the project by connecting them with the PPA. She helped organize the Coordinators into a cohesive team, which began working together effectively for the Senior School in September 2024.
A major step forward was putting existing informal Year WhatsApp groups under the PPA Community umbrella in WhatsApp; as well as completing coverage of all Senior Year groups. These channels have become invaluable for providing timely reminders and keeping parents up to date on important school matters. To further support new families, the PPA launched a Welcome Kit last year that includes a QR code, making it simple for parents to join the WhatsApp community and stay connected from the start. If you haven't already joined the WhatsApp PPA Community, feel free to join the International Parents Group (don't be fooled by the name, this group is for all parents: Portuguese and Foreigners) via this QR code and navigate and join other groups of interest, including your children's year group.
This improved communication network allows the PPA to identify trends and systemic issues across different years and classes. By gathering parent input and sharing thoughtful suggestions with the school, the PPA ensures that families' voices are heard. Through open and collaborative discussions, the PPA has also gained a better understanding of the school's perspectives and the reasoning behind certain decisions. This spirit of partnership has led the school to forge a productive exchange of ideas with the PPA.
When Mr. Paul Kelly became Head of Senior School, he immediately recognized the importance of collaboration with the PPA. He reached out to the PPA to better understand parents' concerns, further strengthening the relationship between families and the school. The PPA included the Year Coordinators in the meetings with Mr. Paul Kelly to share parents' concerns. Ines called out that she felt proud when Mr. Kelly thanked the PPA and the Year Coordinators for their time and effort.

Improving Communication: Bridging Parents and School
One of the greatest impacts of the Year Coordinator program has been its role in improving communication across the school. Parents often expressed frustration about the abundance of communication channels—some struggled to find information, while others felt left out entirely. The PPA with the Year Coordinators, in partnership with the school, have addressed this challenge by streamlining communication through WhatsApp groups, ensuring that when urgent matters arise—such as a power outage or earthquake—parents receive timely and accurate updates.
Beyond emergencies, Year Coordinators help filter and highlight key messages, reducing confusion and keeping everyone on track with important events and deadlines. This direct line of communication also allows the PPA to gather feedback from parents, identify systemic issues across different years and classes, and present these insights to the school in a collaborative spirit. As a result, the PPA, Year Coordinators, and the school have collectively improved communication and there is a greater sense of mutual support.
Why Do Parents Volunteer?
Our Year Coordinators come from diverse backgrounds, but share a common motivation to contribute to their children's school experience and to support fellow families.
- Ana (Grade 11) has always collaborated with her children's schools, seeing involvement as a way to understand the environment where her kids spend so much time.
- Inês (Grade 7), who once lived abroad, knows firsthand how challenging it can be for international families to settle in. She volunteers to help others feel at home.
- Katherine (Grade 6) sees volunteering as a way to help parents integrate and understand the school, reducing confusion and building trust.
- Patricia (Grade 9) says she wants to be useful and make her own small contribution to the school community
- Margarida (Grade 12), a parent at PaRK for 17 years, enjoys using her experience to answer questions, clarify misunderstandings, and advocate for parents when needed.
- Rita (Grade 10), with years of volunteering experience both here and in London, is driven by the chance to be actively engaged in her children's daily lives.
- For Maria João (Grade 8), being a volunteer is a meaningful way to contribute to the school community and a way to actively participate in her children's daily school life. It's a truly rewarding and enriching experience.
Making a Difference: Memorable Moments
Year Coordinators are often the first to notice when parents feel isolated or confused. Margarida recalls reading messages from international parents struggling to make friends. In response, she helped launch regular PPA Outings—monthly meetups where families can connect and support each other. The gratitude she receives from parents, and the sense of community these events fostered are some of her proudest achievements.
Inês finds fulfillment when parents thank her for sharing information or when the group supports each other, especially newcomers facing cultural challenges. Rita loves seeing the entire community come together at the Summer Fair, where parents, students, and staff collaborate for a joyful celebration.
Maria João has volunteered since 2015, when the PPA was founded. The Year Coordinator initiative is a project that has evolved positively over the years, and that progress makes her feel both proud and motivated to keep contributing.
Why Should You Volunteer?
Volunteering as a Year Coordinator is not just about giving back—it's about growing alongside your child and community. As Margarida says, "We grow and learn as our children grow. The only way to learn from others and be part of the community is by participating." Katherine adds that while school is a big part of a parent's life, for children, it is their whole world. Being involved shows your child that their school matters to you too.
Rita emphasizes that volunteering can fit any schedule—whether you help at a big event like the Summer Fair, coordinate a year group, or assist occasionally. Every contribution counts, and there's a role for everyone.

Todas as comunidades escolares bem-sucedidas têm um ingrediente secreto: pais voluntários dedicados. Na nossa escola, os Year Coordinators são embaixadores de cada ano letivo e desempenham um papel fundamental na construção de pontes, promoção da comunicação e acolhimento de todas as famÃlias. O seu trabalho acontece muitas vezes nos bastidores, mas o seu impacto é sentido por alunos, pais e colaboradores. Este mês, reconhecemos as suas contribuições inestimáveis e convidamos mais pais a juntarem-se a este projeto tão gratificante.
A História do Programa de Year Coordinators
O programa de Year Coordinators começou como uma iniciativa no equipa anterior da Associação de Pais do PaRK (PPA), mas inicialmente houve dificuldade em ganhar vida. Quando a Margarida assumiu a projeto, quem desempenhava o papel de Year Coordinator não tinha nome nem função definida e atuava de forma isolada e independente. A Margarida nomeou o cargo, definiu responsabilidades claras e deu nova vida ao projeto, ligando-o à PPA e à escola. Ajudou a organizar os Year Coordinators como uma equipa coesa, que começou a trabalhar em conjunto de forma eficaz na Senior School a partir de setembro de 2024.
Um passo importante foi integrar os grupos informais de WhatsApp de cada ano escolar na PPA Community no WhatsApp, e garantir que todos os anos da Senior School estavam cobertos. Estes canais tornaram-se essenciais para enviar lembretes e manter os pais atualizados sobre assuntos relevantes da escola. Para apoiar melhor as novas famÃlias, a PPA lançou também no ano passado um Welcome Kit, que inclui um QR code para que os pais possam facilmente juntar-se à comunidade WhatsApp desde o inÃcio.
Se ainda não se juntou à PPA Community no WhatsApp, pode entrar no Grupo de Pais Internacionais (não se deixe enganar pelo nome — este grupo é para todos os pais: portugueses e estrangeiros) através do QR code e explorar outros grupos de interesse, incluindo o grupo correspondente ao ano escolar dos seus filhos.
Esta rede de comunicação permite à PPA identificar tendências e questões recorrentes entre diferentes anos e turmas. Ao recolher feedback dos pais e partilhar sugestões construtivas com a escola, a PPA garante que as vozes das famÃlias são ouvidas. Através de discussões abertas e colaborativas, a PPA passou também a compreender melhor as perspetivas da escola e a lógica por detrás de certas decisões. Este espÃrito de parceria levou a escola a estabelecer um produtivo intercâmbio de ideias com a PPA.
Quando o Mr. Paul Kelly assumiu o cargo de Head of Senior School, reconheceu de imediato a importância de colaborar com a PPA. Contactou-os para compreender melhor as preocupações dos pais, fortalecendo ainda mais a relação entre as famÃlias e a escola. A PPA passou a incluir os Year Coordinators nas reuniões com o Mr. Kelly para partilhar as preocupações dos pais. A Inês referiu com orgulho o momento em que o Mr. Kelly agradeceu à PPA e aos Year Coordinators o seu tempo e empenho.

Melhorar a Comunicação: Aproximar Pais e Escola
Um dos maiores impactos do programa de Year Coordinators tem sido na melhoria da comunicação com a escola. Muitos pais manifestaram frustração com a quantidade de canais de comunicação — alguns tinham dificuldade em encontrar informação, enquanto outros sentiam-se à margem. A PPA, com o apoio dos Year Coordinators e em parceria com a escola, tem trabalhado para simplificar a comunicação através de grupos de WhatsApp. Por exemplo, em caso de emergência — como falhas de eletricidade ou sismos — os pais recebem atualizações mais rápidas e precisas.
Para além das emergências, os Year Coordinators ajudam a filtrar e destacar mensagens-chave, reduzindo a confusão e mantendo todos a par de eventos e prazos importantes. Esta linha direta de comunicação permite também recolher opiniões dos pais, identificar padrões e problemas comuns, e apresentar essas informações à escola num espÃrito colaborativo. Como resultado, a comunicação entre a PPA, os Year Coordinators e a escola tem melhorado significativamente, num espÃrito de apoio mútuo.
Porque é que os Pais são Voluntários?
Os nossos Year Coordinators têm origens diversas, mas partilham a mesma motivação: contribuir para a experiência escolar dos seus filhos e apoiar outras famÃlias.
- Ana (Grade 11) sempre colaborou com as escolas dos filhos, vendo o envolvimento como uma forma de compreender melhor o ambiente onde os filhos passam tanto tempo.
- Inês (Grade 7), que viveu no estrangeiro, sabe como pode ser difÃcil para famÃlias internacionais adaptarem-se. Voluntaria-se para ajudar outros a sentirem-se em casa.
- Katherine (Grade 6) vê o voluntariado como uma forma de ajudar os pais a integrarem-se e compreenderem a escola, reduzindo a confusão e construindo confiança.
- PatrÃcia (Grade 9) quer ser útil e contribuir, mesmo que de forma modesta, para a comunidade escolar.
- Margarida (Grade 12), mãe no PaRK há 17 anos, gosta de usar a sua experiência para esclarecer dúvidas, desfazer mal-entendidos e defender os pais quando necessário.
- Rita (Grade 10), com anos de experiência de voluntariado em Lisboa e Londres, sente-se motivada pela oportunidade de estar envolvida no quotidiano escolar dos filhos.
- Para Maria João (Grade 8), ser voluntária é uma forma significativa de contribuir para a escola e participar ativamente na vida escolar dos filhos — uma experiência verdadeiramente gratificante e enriquecedora.
A Fazer a Diferença: Momentos Memoráveis
Os Year Coordinators são muitas vezes os primeiros a perceber quando os pais se sentem isolados ou confusos. Margarida recorda-se de ler mensagens de pais estrangeiros com dificuldade em fazer amizades. Como resposta, ajudou a lançar os PPA Outings — encontros mensais onde as famÃlias podem conviver e apoiar-se mutuamente. A gratidão que recebe dos pais e o espÃrito de comunidade que se criou são, para ela, das maiores recompensas.
A Inês sente-se realizada quando os pais lhe agradecem por partilhar informações ou quando o grupo se apoia mutuamente, sobretudo no caso de famÃlias recém-chegadas que enfrentam desafios culturais. A Rita adora ver toda a comunidade reunida na Summer Fair, onde pais, alunos e funcionários colaboram para uma alegre celebração.
A Maria João é voluntária desde 2015, quando a PPA foi fundada. O projeto dos Year Coordinators evoluiu muito positivamente ao longo do tempo, e esse progresso dá-lhe motivação e orgulho para continuar a contribuir.
Porque Deve Ser Voluntário?
Ser Year Coordinator não é apenas uma forma de retribuir — é uma oportunidade de crescer com o seu filho e com a comunidade. Como diz a Margarida: "Crescemos e aprendemos à medida que os nossos filhos crescem. A única forma de aprender com os outros e fazer parte da comunidade é participando." A Katherine acrescenta que, embora a escola seja apenas uma parte da vida de um adulto, para uma criança é o seu mundo inteiro. Envolver-se mostra ao seu filho que a escola também é importante para si.
A Rita destaca que há formas de ajudar que se adaptam a qualquer horário — seja num grande evento como a Summer Fair, a coordenar um ano letivo, ou a apoiar pontualmente. Todas as contribuições contam e há espaço para todos.
Um Convite à Participação
Se alguma vez pensou em envolver-se, este é o momento ideal. Os cargos de Year Coordinator estão agora a expandir-se também para a Junior School, Early Learning e outros colégios (o Restelo e a Praça de Espanha).
